Good point. We tried the same thing last spring.

Previews are drawn at a phone width. The exact cut changes with the screen, so put the words that matter first.

The headline formula

Your headline is the line under your name. LinkedIn shows it on your profile and in search results, and people see it next to every post and comment you write. Most good headlines use one of five shapes.

ShapeFill inExample
Role + who you help + result[Role] helping [who] [get a result]Fractional CFO helping SaaS founders plan cash for the next 18 months
I helpI help [who] [do what] | [proof]I help clinic owners fill empty slots | 40 clinics so far
Title | proof | what you post about[Title] at [Company] | [one proof] | Posts on [topic]Head of Sales at Quarry | Built the team from 2 to 14 | Posts on first sales hires
Plain title + niche[Title] for [niche]Product designer for health apps
Now + next[What you do now] | Learning [what is next]Teacher moving into UX research | Learning by testing school apps
  • Lead with the words someone would search for.
  • Name a real group of people, not "businesses" or "everyone".
  • Use one piece of proof you can back up. Skip titles you gave yourself.
  • Separate parts with "|" or a comma so it reads at a glance.

Questions

How long can a LinkedIn headline be?

220 characters. LinkedIn's help pages do not print the number. Current third party references that test the field report 220, which is the limit the counter on this page uses.

How much of my headline do people see?

All of it on your profile. In search results and above your comments it is cut to one line, often around the first 60 to 70 characters on a phone. Put your role and who you help first.

Should my headline be my job title?

It can be, but it does more work if it also says who you help or what you are known for. If your headline and current position are the same, LinkedIn hides the position line at the top of your profile.

Should I use keywords in my headline?

Use the words people would type to find someone like you, such as "fractional CFO" or "UX researcher". Your headline shows in search results, so plain job words help people recognise you.

Can I use emoji or special fonts?

You can, but screen readers read them out oddly and fancy fonts are harder to search. Plain words work for everyone.

Are these headlines from real profiles?

No. They were written for this page with made up companies and numbers. Swap in your own.
