How to format a LinkedIn post

  1. Write or paste your post in the editor.
  2. Select the words you want to style and press a style. With nothing selected, the style applies to the whole text.
  3. Select some lines and press Bullets or Numbers to make a list. Press Plain to undo styles on the selection.
  4. Check the preview for where see more falls, then press Copy and paste into LinkedIn.

How styled text works on LinkedIn

LinkedIn's post box has no formatting buttons. Styled text works by swapping letters for look alike characters from the Unicode Mathematical Alphanumeric Symbols block, and underline and strikethrough add a combining mark after each letter.

That has costs. Screen readers often read styled letters badly or not at all, search may not match a styled word, and some fonts show empty boxes. Use it for a few words that carry the point, not for whole sentences.

The preview marks the see more fold. It is an estimate: roughly three lines, about 210 characters on desktop and about 140 on a phone.

Questions

Is this real bold text?

No. LinkedIn and X have no bold button in the post box, so the tool swaps each letter for a look alike letter from the Unicode Mathematical Alphanumeric Symbols block. It looks bold everywhere, but to a computer it is a different character.

Can screen readers read styled text?

Often not well. Many screen readers read each styled letter by its full name, or skip it. Keep styled text to a few words, never style a whole post, and never put key information only in styled text.

Does styled text show up in search?

Usually not as the plain word. Search on LinkedIn and X looks for the letters you typed, and a styled word is made of different characters, so a bold keyword can stop matching.

Why do some letters not change?

Unicode has no styled version of accented letters and most punctuation, so those stay plain. Italic and bold italic have no styled digits either.

Is my text sent anywhere?

No. The formatter runs in your browser. Copy puts the text on your clipboard and nothing else.
