Do hashtags work on LinkedIn?
Most guides say to use three to five hashtags. None of the ones we checked show data that hashtags raise reach. Here is what LinkedIn has actually changed, and what we would do.

What LinkedIn has changed
Hashtags used to be a bigger part of LinkedIn. People could show the topics they post about as hashtags on their profile. LinkedIn's Help Center says that feature was removed in February 2024, as part of changes to creator mode.
Hashtags in posts still work. LinkedIn's own API docs show how an app adds a hashtag to a post, and it becomes a link readers can click.
The bigger shift is in how the feed finds posts. In March 2026 LinkedIn said it rebuilt the system that picks posts for you around large language models, so it "better understands what a post is actually about." A system that reads the whole post has less need for a tag to tell it the topic.
What the evidence shows
| Source | What it says | What it is based on |
|---|---|---|
| No statement on hashtags and reach in the pages we checked | Help Center, March 2026 feed posts | |
| Sprout Social, May 2026 | Use three to five relevant hashtags | Best practice advice. No hashtag data given |
| Hootsuite, March 2025 | Use three to five hashtags, skip hashtag spam | Best practice advice. No hashtag data given |
| Closely, December 2025 | Posts with hashtags had 12.6 percent higher engagement and about 9 percent more reach | 10,000 posts. Method and dates not stated. Correlation only |
The only numbers we found come from one vendor study, and it does not explain how it measured. It also shows correlation, not cause. Posts with hashtags may come from people who post more carefully in general.
So the honest answer is: nobody has shown that hashtags lift reach on LinkedIn today. Nobody has shown that a few relevant ones hurt either.
Why guides still say three to five
The advice is older than LinkedIn's recent changes. LinkedIn removed profile hashtags in 2024 and rebuilt how its feed finds posts in 2026. The advice has stayed the same, often copied from one guide to the next.
That does not make it harmful. A few relevant tags do little damage. It just means you should not expect them to do the work of a clear post. If a guide gives you an exact reach boost for hashtags, ask where the number came from.
Hashtags for LinkedIn Pages
There is one place where hashtags have a defined job. LinkedIn Help says a company Page can turn on up to 3 hashtags for its Trending Employee Content section, on its Life or What We Do Page. When employees use those hashtags on photo and video posts, eligible posts can show in that section. Only super admins can manage them.
If you run a company Page and want staff posts to show there, pick one short, unique tag and tell your team to use it.
What to do instead
If the goal is to reach people who care about your topic, three things matter more than tags:
- A first line that names the topic. "Our pricing page lost 30 percent of signups" tells readers and the feed what the post is about. See hook writing.
- Consistency. Posting on the same few topics over weeks tells readers what to expect from you.
- Comments on other people's posts. A useful comment on a post in your field puts your name in front of the people you want to reach.
A simple rule
- Write the topic into the post. Name the thing you are talking about in plain words. That is what a language model reads.
- Add one to three specific hashtags if you like. #PricingStrategy tells a reader more than #Business.
- Put them at the end. Tags in the first line push your hook down and look like clutter above the fold.
- Skip hashtag walls. Ten tags look like spam to a human reader, whatever the feed thinks.
Our post grader flags hashtag clutter along with the other things that cost you readers.
Test it on your own posts
If you want a real answer for your account, run a simple test. For six posts, add two relevant hashtags at the end. For the next six, leave them off. Keep topics and times similar. Compare impressions and comments per post. If there is no clear gap, stop thinking about hashtags and spend the time on your hook.
What about hashtags on X?
Hashtags work on X as clickable, searchable labels too. X Help notes that hashtags still work in Premium longer posts. On X a hashtag also spends characters from your 280, so each one needs to earn its place. See the X character limit.
Questions
Do hashtags still work on LinkedIn in 2026?
They still work as clickable labels. There is no LinkedIn statement or solid public data showing they raise reach today.
How many hashtags should I use on LinkedIn?
One to three specific ones is plenty. Guides from Sprout Social and Hootsuite suggest three to five, but neither gives data for that number.
Did LinkedIn remove hashtags?
LinkedIn removed hashtags from profiles in February 2024. Hashtags in posts still work.
Do hashtags help LinkedIn company Pages?
They have one defined use: a Page can turn on up to 3 hashtags for its Trending Employee Content section, according to LinkedIn Help.
Where should hashtags go in a LinkedIn post?
At the end. Your first line should be your hook, and tags up top push it down.
