LinkedIn post image sizes, from LinkedIn's own pages

Most size guides copy each other. This one only lists sizes LinkedIn publishes, says which page each comes from, and points out where LinkedIn's pages disagree.

Post image sizes

LinkedIn Help does not list a recommended size for an image in a personal post. It does list sizes in two places: its image specs for Pages and its single image ad specs. The ad specs are the most complete, and the feed shows the same shapes, so they are a sound guide.

ShapeRatioRecommended sizeAllowed range (ads)
Wide (landscape)1.91:11200 x 627 (Pages) or 1200 x 628 (ads)640 x 360 to 7680 x 4320
Square1:11200 x 1200360 x 360 to 4320 x 4320
Tall (portrait)4:5720 x 900360 x 640 to 2430 x 4320
From LinkedIn Help, checked 30 Sep 2026.

Which one to pick? On a phone, a square or 4:5 image fills more of the screen than a wide one, because the feed is a narrow column. Use wide images for link previews and charts that need width. That is a layout point, not a LinkedIn rule.

Where LinkedIn's pages disagree

  • The Page specs say 1200 x 627 for wide images. The ad specs say 1200 x 628. One pixel will not matter, but now you know why guides differ.
  • The Page specs say images narrower than 200 pixels show as a small thumbnail. The ad specs say images under 401 pixels wide do. Stay well above both.
  • The Page specs allow PNG or JPEG up to 3 MB. The ad specs allow JPG, PNG or GIF up to 5 MB. The general media page allows files up to 100 MB. Keep images under 3 MB and you are safe everywhere.

Carousel style document posts

The swipeable "carousel" posts you see from people are document posts: a PDF or slide deck uploaded to a post. LinkedIn allows PDF, PPT, PPTX, DOC and DOCX, up to 100 MB and 300 pages. Every page must be the same size, and PDFs with layers must be flattened first.

LinkedIn does not publish a page size for documents. Square or 4:5 pages match the image shapes above and fill a phone screen well. Our step by step guide covers how to post a carousel on LinkedIn.

Upload checklist

  1. Pick the shape: 1:1 or 4:5 for most posts, 1.91:1 for link images.
  2. Export at the recommended size, or larger in the same ratio.
  3. Save as a high resolution JPEG, as LinkedIn Help suggests, and keep it under 3 MB.
  4. Check the key content sits in the middle, away from the edges.
  5. Preview on your phone before you post.

Practical tips

  • Keep text on images large and short. Most people read the feed on a phone.
  • Keep key details in the center. LinkedIn warns that cover images may be cropped on different screens.
  • Write the post, not just the picture. The text above an image is what shows up first and what people search. See how to write a hook.

Questions

What is the best image size for a LinkedIn post?

1200 x 1200 pixels for a square image, 720 x 900 for a tall 4:5 image, or 1200 x 627 for a wide image. These come from LinkedIn's Page and ad image specs.

What size is a LinkedIn cover photo?

1584 x 396 pixels, as a JPG or PNG under 8 MB, according to LinkedIn Help.

What size should a LinkedIn carousel be?

LinkedIn does not publish a page size for document posts. It requires every page to be the same size, and the file to be under 100 MB and 300 pages. Square or 4:5 pages work well on phones.

What is the maximum image file size on LinkedIn?

LinkedIn's media help page says files cannot exceed 100 MB and images can be up to 36 megapixels. Page image specs are stricter at 3 MB, so staying under 3 MB is safest.
